Course title: Science Quantification and Policy (taught in English/1 credit)
Course description:
Science for Policy is the process by which information is transferred “from science” (individual researchers, scientific communities) to policymakers at all levels and incorporated into a process called evidence-based or evidence-informed policy. Nowadays, almost every legislative action, regardless of the topic or government level, has a scientific component to it, typically encoded in a quantitative or semi-quantitative manner.
While policies are not made by science alone, science can help decision-makers at all levels, including the public, to more accurately assess the benefits and potential consequences of the different options available. – There are, however, significant challenges and deficits inherently related to this process, having technical and socio-economic root causes.
The explicit recognition of these limitations and the growing interest in their proper visualisation, including visualisation of their impacts, have changed the scientific world beyond recognition in recent years. The days when scientists produced reports and expected, together with society, that policy-makers would simply act upon them are gone in most technologically developed countries.
The course will invite a guest speaker to share his experience and practical insights accumulated over a career spanning over 25 years , encompassing work in both science support and policy-making services at the European Commission DG CONNECT. Through sharing of state-of-the art knowledge and best practice examples from different application areas, particularly from environmental sustainability, this module outlines the skills needed by stakeholders so that research results could have a bigger impact on policy and society in general.
This course explores the skills which all stakeholders across society, including scientists and policy-makers, need in order to better engage with each other, build trust and develop informed decisions.
